There is a point when a portrait stops being simply about the body and becomes a study of shape, light and movement. In Chapter No. 222 of Photos by Burger, model Pavel Du Plessis steps into that territory before the lens of photographer Martin Burger in Prague.
The series strips the setting almost entirely down to one element: fabric. Warm beige curtains fall from ceiling to floor, wrapping around Pavel and sometimes becoming part of his pose. Rather than functioning merely as a backdrop, the drapery creates folds, shadows and vertical lines that echo the contours of the body.
A Mature Body, Photographed Without Apology
What makes the photographs especially appropriate for Hunks Over 40 is their treatment of the mature male physique. There is no attempt to disguise age or transform Pavel into something unreal. Definition through the torso, shoulders and legs is emphasized by soft directional light, while his poses alternate between classical, almost sculptural gestures and quieter moments partially concealed behind the curtains.
The strongest frames have a distinctly fine-art nude quality. Pavel stretches upward, turns into profile or emerges through folds of fabric as though the photographer were creating a living sculpture. One monochrome portrait pushes that idea even further, reducing the composition to body, shadow and texture.
Male beauty certainly does not expire at 40. Projects like this demonstrate why the mature male body can be particularly compelling photographic material: character, physicality and experience become part of the portrait.
